How to Find Your Ideal Photographer

You got engaged and now you’re wedding planning! Somewhere in the midst of all of that, you need to pick a photographer. If you have no clue where to even start, I’m here to help. Read on for 5 tips on finding the right person for your big day.

1. Style – There are two big things to consider when it comes to investigating your style. One is storytelling and the other is editing. Storytelling is how does the photographer set up the shot? Are they formal, intimate or more natural? Editing is how do the final photos look, are the pictures light and airy, dark and moody or maybe warm and bright. Remember these are around forever and could be up on your walls. Take into consideration your home style when choosing a photographer with an editing style you love.

2. Instagram – A great place to start looking for a wedding photographer is on Instagram. Hashtags make a powerful search tool and starting there will give you some ideas to what you like. Try searching #_______weddingphotographer and insert your location into the blank. You can also search for photos taken at your venue if you want someone familiar with the location.

3. Personality – So maybe you have a couple of people you like, now how do you pick? Their personality will affect your experience. Check out their website, read their bio or ask for a phone call. Determine how involved you want them to be, and remember they will be around for the whole day and will probably witness all of the most intimate moments of the day. So, look for someone you feel comfortable with who is going to provide you with great service.

4. Deliverables – Ask for package prices, what is included, how much coverage you’ll receive, if they have a second shooter etc. Do you want a physical album or maybe an online gallery you could share with family? What they offer and final presentation might influence your decision.

5. Price – You might end up paying a little more than you anticipated, but if you’re getting great service and a product you really love it’s probably worth it. You also have to keep in mind all the work that goes on behind the scenes. Maintaining and purchasing expensive equipment, training, bookkeeping, software, emailing, planning and editing. That being said there’s a lot of price points for photographers. The more experience they have the pricier it will be.

I hope this helps you find the perfect photographer. Heck, it might even be me. I’d like to think so. If you have any questions about the info or anything else related to photography give me a shout.
